Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, more popularly referred to as simply MCLA, is a public, residential, liberal arts college in North Adams, which is a city in the US state of Massachusetts, in Berkshire County, with a population of more than 14 600 inhabitants, as estimated during the 2000 census, which makes it the least populous city in the state.
MCLA was established in 1894 and was originally founded as part of the state's normal school system, its original mission being to train teachers. Today, MCLA, which is the smallest college in the state system, offers both undergraduate and graduate programs, leading to Bachelor of Science and Arts degrees, as well as a Master of Education track, overall, providing its students 19 major studies and 35 minors to choose from.
MCLA's athletic teams are known as the Trailblazers and they compete in NCAA Division III, with 11 men's and women's teams. Their distinctive colors are navy and gold.
The noteworthy graduates, from MCLA, are: Daniel E. Bosley - member of the Mass. House of Representatives (served 1986 - present), Thomas Calter - member of the Mass. House of Representatives (served 2007 - present), Jane Swift - former lieutenant governor under Governor Paul Cellucci (1999-2001), and served as acting governor (April 2001 to January 2003), and Mary Grant - president of MCLA and the first alumna to serve as president.
